FAQs
Q:
Can my cancer be cured or treated?
A: All cancers are treatable in the context of potentially effecting
the biological behavior and many cancers are, in fact, potentially curable.
Q:
What factors determine whether or not my cancer is curable?
A: The most critical factors include the stage of the tumor, biological
behavior, growth rate, and responsiveness or sensitivity to therapy.
Q:
What type of diet should I follow as a cancer patient?
A: A nutritionally based diet using the four main food groups is
the basis of any diet in health or disease. Your physician may instruct
you to avoid raw or uncooked foods during your treatment and avoid food
that is difficult to digest at least five days before undergoing radiation
therapy. Also, your physician may suggest eating four to six light meals
during treatment.
Q:
What is Radiation Therapy?
A: Radiation therapy is a treatment that incorporates ionizing
radiation to destroy malignancies. It can be applied to patients who suffer
from certain symptoms, or to treat malignancies that cannot be accessed
by surgery. Radiation is also used to shrink tumors that can later be
removed by laser surgery, or to fight against cancer cells and destroy
malignancies.
Radiation
can only affect cancer cells in a treated area and can be delivered from
a machine or implantation of radioactive material placed directly into
or adjacent to the tumor. Both kinds of radiation can be used on a patient,
and your Radiotherapy Associates of Upstate New York doctor will ensure
you receive the treatment best for you. Your doctor will also discuss
with you the potential side effects of your treatments and what signs
to look for.
