Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy is a type of radiation treatment given with radioactive material placed directly into the patient’s body. Radioactive seeds (or sources) are placed in the tumor in order to give a high radiation dose to the tumor while reducing the dose to surrounding healthy tissues in the body.

Lung and Brain Brachytherapy
HDB (High Dose Brachytherapy) is used to increase the amount of radiation given to the tumor and to decrease radiation to nearby tissues, such as the heart, normal lung, esophageal tissues and spinal cord. The radioactive source is inserted temporarily in the tumor itself.

Gynecologic Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy is also used on cancers requiring gynecological attention. Cervical and uterine cancer may require Brachytherapy depending on the stage, type and grade of the cancer.

The Theraplan 3D Conformal Treatment Plan
The Theraplan 3D Conformal Treatment Planning offered by Radiotherapy Associates gives patients the best of cancer control. After the patient undergoes a CAT scan, the anatomical information is entered into a specialized computer. The sophisticated treatment planning computer program helps define the technique for delivering high doses of radiation to the tumor while minimizing the dose to normal surrounding tissue. NOMOS Conformal Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
NOMOS Conformal Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is an approach to targeting cancerous tumors using high dosages of radiation while protecting sensitive surrounding tissue. Rather than targeting the tumor with a single beam, the patient is treated with many very small beams. Prostate Radioactive Seed Implantation
Prostate Radioactive Seed Implantation is an effective treatment option for clinically organ-confined prostate cancer. The procedure involves implanting tiny radioactive seeds into the middle of the cancer where they give off radiation for approximately one year. The radioactivity of the seeds decays during months after the operation and there are few long-term risks associated with the treatment.

Conventional External Beam Radiation
Conventional external beam radiation is a painless method of radiation therapy commonly used to treat a particular part of the patient with either high-energy X-rays or high-energy electrons. Electron beams are used when a tumor is close to the surface due to their ability to deliver a high dose close to the surface, which then tapers off rapidly at a depth determined by the energy. A machine called a linear accelerator, which is located at a distance from the patient, delivers the radiation. This type of treatment is typically administered five days per week and lasts only 15 minutes per session.

Nucletron High Dose Rate Therapy
Patients with cancers of the lung, cervix, uterus, esophagus, rectum or prostate most commonly undergo Nucletron High Dose Rate Therapy. The High Dose Rate therapy is an option only after external radiation has been conducted. The high dose treatment is delivered directly into or next to the tumor. The maximum dose is directed towards the tumor while surrounding tissues will have minimized radiation.
